Because so much business is done today on computers, knowing how to type and how to type well can really be a deciding factor on finding a good job. A lot of places make you think that you need to buy a program in order to tone your typing skills, but there are actually free games and programs online that will give you the same experiences.

Did you know there is actually a science behind how to measure how many words you type in a minute? For example: the sentence “I do” isn’t measured as 2 words, it’s measures as only 1. This is because when you are analyzing your typing skills, every 5 characters or keystrokes counts as a word. The sentence “You’re informed” counts as 3 words because, including the space, there are 15 characters.

The average person, when they are writing what someone says, can type 33 words per minutes; when they are composing, they can type 19. The average professional typist will type in speeds of 50 to 80 words per minute. Although some jobs can require you to type from 85 to 90 words per minute, these are usually only time-sensitive jobs that require expert typing skills.

Typing Lessons for Beginners

There are several easy ways to teach yourself how to type. There are hundreds of online sites that are dedicated to teaching people how to type, and there are quite a few very helpful ones! Just be careful, because some of them are just scams or viruses.

There are many ways you can teach yourself to type that doesn’t require any special program or website. One idea is to have a friend read you a short story, have them start reading slowly and work up their speed as you increase your typing agility. Another idea is to type lyrics to songs that are very familiar to you. These may seem like strange ideas, but they do work! By working with things you are familiar with, you can focus on the act of typing, instead of what you are typing.

The follow is a popular typing test, found on a site called Power Typing. The paragraph has exactly 75 words. Have someone start a timer, and time yourself to see how many words you can complete in a minute. Keep in mind, 33 is the average.
